Kangana Ranaut on Mental Hai Kya controversy: It will trigger relevant talk around the stigma

After Members of the Indian Psychiatric Society (IPS) slammed Mental Hai Kya for its title being derogatory to those suffering from mental illnesses, Kangana Ranaut has now released a statement through sister Rangoli Chandel's Twitter account.

Rangoli tweeted saying, "On behalf of Kangana all I want to say is that everyone will be proud of 'Mental Hai Kya' the topic and subject she has chosen will trigger relevant talk and discussions around the stigma."

Members of the Indian Psychiatric Society (IPS) had expressed their disappointment by writing a letter to Prasoon Joshi, Chairman of Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) over the title of the film.

In the letter, IPS stated that it objects to a "number of issues", as the film seems to violate many sections of the Mental Health Care Act, 2017. The letter read, ''We take serious objections to the title of the movie which is discriminative, stigmatising, degrading and inhuman in projecting mental disorders and persons who suffer from mental disorders.''

"We strongly demand the title to be removed with immediate effect preventing further damage to the modesty of mental health service users,'' reads the letter. Mental Hai is produced by Ekta Kapoor and directed by Prakash Kovelamudi. The film also stars Rajkummar Rao, Amyra Dastur, Amrita Puri Jimmy Shergill. Shah Rukh Khan will have an extended cameo in the film.

On April 16, Balaji Motion Pictures, Ekta's production company took to Twitter to share the first motion poster of the film.
